Netflix’s OpenConnect initiative is a prime example, which allows local ISPs to directly host Netflix content, is a prime example of gradually moving digital infrastructure closer to people’s homes.
Yet despite this progress, even a hundred miles of distance can mean milliseconds of delay. Why settle for that? What if we didn't inch closer, but placed CDN infrastructure directly within consumer homes? This question has driven a new wave of decentralized CDN projects, fundamentally inverting the traditional CDN model.

How Pipe Network Makes Hyperlocal CDN a Reality
Pipe builds its hyperlocal CDN through three critical technology components: a hyperlocal strategy built on performant permissionless nodes, specialized NAT hole punching for reliable connectivity, and zero-knowledge TCP for building a large-scale permissionless network. Hyperlocal Strategy
Pipe’s main nodes are called PoPs, which is industry jargon for Points-of-Presence. Pipe’s nodes can be run by anyone, not just data centers or professional deployers. By decentralizing CDN infrastructure into ordinary homes, offices, etc., Pipe dramatically shrinks the distance between users and their content. To give a sense of scale, it’s 150 miles, down to less than 10.
These PoPs are specifically optimized for CDN workloads. A core part of Pipe’s thesis is to build technology that makes CDNs faster, so they can work even better on consumer hardware. They’re creating technology innovations that make CDNs better, and then using that edge to power homes.
Making Home Networks Valuable with NAT Hole Punching
Imagine you're trying to stream a movie that's hosted on someone else's device in their home. Your smart TV needs to reach into their network and fetch that content, but their router might block that incoming request. This highlights a fundamental technical challenge in decentralized networking—how do you reliably connect to devices located behind home routers and firewalls?
Home routers typically prevent these incoming connections for security and privacy reasons, and so while these protections are important, they present a significant hurdle if you're trying to build decentralized networks. Pipe addresses this issue through a technique known as NAT hole punching. NAT hole punching allows devices behind typical consumer routers to securely establish direct communication.
The catch is that every router is different. Each model and brand uses distinct methods for blocking incoming connections, making NAT traversal notoriously difficult. To reliably solve this, Pipe had to become an expert across a wide variety of routers and firewall techniques. Navigating these intricacies is no small feat, and it's exactly this technical depth and real-world experience that sets Pipe apart.
Trustless Content Delivery with Zero-Knowledge TCP
Building a decentralized CDN means genuinely living up to decentralization, and a central aspect of that is being "trustless." In a trustless CDN, the protocol is supposed to reward users for participating, and nobody should have to take your word that you're doing your job. If anyone can join the network with the goal of delivering content, we need a way to verify they're actually doing it, without relying solely on trust.
That's exactly where Pipe’s zero-knowledge TCP (ZK TCP) verification comes in. TCP is the core protocol that the Internet relies on to deliver most content. Every device you use, your smartphone, your laptop, your smart TV, fetches content using TCP. ZK TCP takes this a step further by providing cryptographic proof that content delivery genuinely occurred, without compromising user privacy and without relying on trust.
In practice, this means any node on the Pipe Network can cryptographically demonstrate to the network that it actually delivered content to users. There's no need for third-party audits; the proof is built right into the delivery protocol.
Pipe X DAWN: Hyperconverged Hardware that unlocks consumer participation
The DAWN Black Box is purpose-built to optimize virtual workloads (think arbitrary computing code). It leverages software-defined routing and user-space virtualization techniques, which enables consumer-grade hardware to perform at levels previously reserved for specialized data-center infrastructure. By prioritizing a zero-copy approach, the DAWN Black Box efficiently moves Internet packets directly into virtualized workloads without redundant copying, which dramatically accelerates data throughput and minimizes latency.
And the Internet of the future demands a hyperconverged device that has these capabilities. We need (1) a single piece of hardware that not only seamlessly combines computing, storage, and networking (so consumers can participate easily), and (2) it also has to perform at the level of data center equipment to pull in web2 demand.
